Dr. Gerardo Moreno

UCLA Family Medicine

Dr. Gerardo Moreno is Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and the Kaiser Permanente Endowed Professor of Community Medicine. He is also the Director of UCLA PRIME-LA (Program in Medical Education) which focuses on the topics of leadership and advocacy for underserved communities. Dr. Moreno is a clinician investigator, and his current research focuses on studying effective healthcare delivery in communities for uninsured vulnerable populations including undocumented residents and older adults. Dr. Moreno has been recognized as one of the most influential young Latino academic leaders in family medicine and health care through his implementation of successful research initiatives and programs that enable and mentor minority students and advocates for state and federal policies that diversify the healthcare workforce, anchored in caring for high-risk patients in underserved communities. Dr. Moreno has a continuity clinic, trains family medicine residents and UCLA medical students, and has a number of published medical works.

Outside of his practice, Dr. Moreno serves as the Board Chair for the Board of Directors for the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) and advises on the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) Clinical Aging study section NIA-C. Dr. Moreno’s contributions to healthcare have been recognized with a prestigious election to the National Academy of Medicine in 2023. He was the 2015-2017 James C. Puffer M.D./ABFM Anniversary Fellow at the Institute of Medicine (IOM), is a past recipient of a National Institute of Aging (NIA-NIH) Paul B. Beeson Career Development Award in Aging, and received the UCLA CTSI Community Engagement Research Program (CERP) pilot award. Dr. Moreno received a Masters of Science in Health Services from the UCLA School of Public Health and completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Foundation Clinical Scholars Program at UCLA. When not serving on the HOLA Board, Dr. Moreno enjoys spending time with his family, pets, traveling and volunteering.
