Heart of Los Angeles is sending love and strength to everyone affected by the recent fires across LA County. As we are witnessing in this difficult time, crisis has a way of bringing us together. The Eaton and Palisades fires have left thousands of Angelenos without homes, belongings, and a sense of normalcy. In the face of such devastation, it’s heartwarming to see the resilience and unity of our community.
In response to this tragedy, Heart of LA has been working hard to support those impacted. We’ve partnered with Ketchum-Downtown YMCA to collect much-needed donations for families in need. Together, we’ve made sure that supplies and resources get to local organizations that are doing vital work in our neighborhoods.
Donation Drive and Volunteer Support
To further aid the community, we set up a Donation Center at Heart of LA’s headquarters. Volunteers came together in full force, making drop-offs and organizing supplies to support local organizations that are on the front lines of the recovery effort. We are deeply grateful for their time, energy, and commitment to helping those in need.
Bringing Healing Through Music and Art
During challenging times like these, support goes beyond physical supplies- it’s about fostering emotional well-being and creative expression. That’s why Heart of LA, in partnership with LA Phil’s YOLA at HOLA, LA County Parks and Rec, City of LA, The Music Center, LA Opera, and Center Theatre Group, has been offering music and visual arts classes for children impacted by the fires. Our teaching artists have been traveling across LA, providing safe, creative spaces for kids to process their emotions, feel a sense of normalcy, and heal through the power of art.
From concerts at Descanso Gardens to music sessions at the LA Arboretum, and recreation centers throughout the city, these classes have become a vital outlet for expression and connection.
A Special Thanks to Our Teaching Artists
We want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude to the teaching artists who have given their time and talent to these efforts. They are not only teaching music and art — they are offering hope and comfort to children who need it most.
Luis Sanchez, a YOLA at HOLA Music Theory and Choir Teaching Artist, shared a powerful reflection on his recent performance for children at Descanso Gardens. Playing guitar and singing for 1.5 hours, he created a space where the kids could momentarily escape the stress and trauma of their circumstances.
Luis explains, “It wasn’t a celebration, but a way to express empathy for communities impacted by the fires. It can be any of us at any time, but right now, we’re in this together. We’re grateful, we’re alive, and we’re supporting the community. That’s music — it unifies people, it unifies hearts. The power of music. I’m here for you.”
He continues, “Sometimes we underestimate the power of music. That’s why I do music — to contribute positively to the community.”
The power of music and art to bring people together and heal is truly incredible. We are beyond thankful to have teaching artists like Luis, who not only teach but also inspire and uplift the spirits of those in need.
