Rams Hold Back-to-School Drive

By CBS Los Angeles IRVINE (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Rams are scoring a touchdown with local students. The team held a back-to-school drive at Friday’s training camp in Irvine to collect supplies for the school year. Rams fans who came to practice donated pencils, binders and other school supplies for kids from downtown L.A. The Rams partnered with Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA) to provide students with supplies. HOLA is a non-profit organization providing academic, art and athletic programs to underserved youth. Rams fan Mark Covarruvias […]

He believes in the arts as a basic right for kids. He is getting a $200,000 award for working for that

By Makeda Easter Few would expect the cacophony coming from the third floor of this plain white building off Wilshire Boulevard. In one room this evening, high school students on flutes and clarinets blaze through their warm-up of scales and arpeggios before launching into a John Williams piece. Across the hallway, middle-school string players run through part of Stravinsky’s “The Firebird.” For these students, the majority of whom live in poverty, an arts education is a luxury — one possible only through Heart of Los Angeles, or HOLA, a nonprofit for youth in […]

In the ballroom at the Beverly Wilshire the crowd was on its feet, dancing around their chairs and clapping to the beat laid down by HOLA’s rock band as they performed Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground.” Their music, along with appearances from entertainer Mandy Moore and comedian Jerrod Carmichael, supplied the vibe for a festive evening as students, teachers, board members and civic leaders celebrated HOLA’s 27th year of serving the children of Los Angeles. Proceeds from this year’s event exceeded $575,000, the 2nd largest amount […]

A New Reality Settles in for Teachers in Central Los Angeles

Yesterday, Bard MAT faculty and graduate students joined two different emergency meetings called by educators at Heart of Los Angeles (HOLA), our community partner where we mentor college-bound high school students. The teachers, students, and families that gathered are primarily first and second generation Central American immigrants, the refugee legacy of several brutal wars and the economic backbone of our city, with varying levels of documentation, deferred action childhood arrival statutes, and most concerning, citizenship designations that distinguish children from their mothers and fathers. These […]

As Youth Orchestra Los Angeles celebrates its 10th anniversary at the LA Philharmonic, 77 musicians from YOLA embarked on five-stop concert tour of California, and YOLA at HOLA sent along eleven of its student musicians along with musicians from the Expo Recreation Center, Harmony Project and LACHSA. “Some of our students have been to London or Tokyo, but they’ve never been on a tour of this scale,” said Monique Van Willingh Music Director at Heart of Los Angeles. “They’re super excited!” The tour started on […]

Barney’s New York X Heart of Los Angeles’ Event Grand Success

Our event last night at Barney’s NYC Beverly Hills was a huge success! Carnival aesthetics and treats were at play as the crowd shopped on behalf of Heart of Los Angeles. Barney’s NYC will be donating a percentage of all sales to HOLA between Oct 4-Oct 6th. We’d like to thank Barneys New York, Our Chair Committee and the Friends of HOLA for this incredible night that brings us even closer to helping more underserved youth across the city.

Tony’s Blog: Breaking the School-to-Prison Pipeline

Last week, an article in the Los Angeles Times documented an alarming trend: L.A. County spends $233,000 a year for each teen it incarcerates. That’s more than the cost of a college education, and vastly more than the approximately $2,000... read more »
