Simone Montemurno Teaching Artist, Introduction to Art and Mixed Media

Simone was born in Manila, Philippines (1980), and received her MFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 2011, and a BFA from the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU in 2002. She makes paintings, sound recordings, and books. Earlier this year, in an exhibition titled “Stonebreakers”at Young Art, Los Angeles, Simone showed a series of 149 paintings of all the rocks that make up a Neo-lithic barrel grave in Denmark.  Her solo exhibition titled “When You Sign Your Name” was on view at metro pcs, an artist run space in Los Angeles’ Chinatown in 2013.  In 2014, Montemurno began running Wik-Ed Women a monthly series of Wikipedia editing sessions at Los Angeles Contemporary Archive (LACA) intended to invite women in the arts to add content to Wikipedia in order to counter the website’s systemic biases. As a teacher, Simone wants to share her knowledge and love of art with all her students, and hopes to act as a conduit between their own creativity and the art & ideas that exist in the world at large.
