Melissa is an experienced educator and leader in education with 14 years teaching experience in elementary and middle schools in California and Tennessee. Her educational leadership responsibilities have included: recruiting, hiring, mentoring, and evaluation of new teachers; serving on a Curriculum Development Committee; as well as working with teachers to update school curriculum and chairing the steering committee for the accreditation process at a leading Pre-K – 6th grade private school. Melissa has both led and received numerous teacher trainings which include: Differentiated Instruction; Building and Sustaining a Professional Learning Community; 21st Century skills; “Active Reading”; and various additional best practices in education training. The passion Melissa has for education came from her own life experiences, as she was the first in her family to attend college. Melissa earned her BS in Multidisciplinary Studies from Tennessee Technological University and her MS in Leadership Education and Administration from the University of Tennessee. She holds teaching credentials for grades 1-8 in Tennessee and grades Pre-K – 12 in California. In 2014, Melissa joined the Advancement Department at the Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences as the Director of Development and Constituent Relations. Melissa is married to David Unger, and they have a son, Parker. Melissa has a strong passion and commitment to help all children reach their potential.
