Megumi Smith YOLA at HOLA Teaching Artist

Megumi began her piano studies at age three, and has never stopped learning about music. A native of Tokyo, Japan, she moved to Los Angeles in 2006 to pursue a master’s degree in percussion performance at California State University, Northridge (CSUN), where she worked with the entire percussion faculty. Trained in all the classical percussion instruments, she enjoys playing both chamber music and in symphony orchestras. In addition to her degree from CSUN, she holds a certificate in Orff Schulwerk.

Megumi was one of the first volunteers to help with the introduction of the YOLA at HOLA program when it opened its doors in the fall of 2010. She soon began filling in as a substitute teacher and joined the staff as a percussion instructor and elementary music specialist in the summer of 2013. Megumi is also the reason that HOLA was lucky enough to have the Fukushima TV Junior Orchestra visit YOLA at HOLA in the summer of 2012. A dedicated teacher of musicians of all ages, she maintains an active schedule teaching privately as well as freelancing as a percussionist in Southern California.

In her “free” time, she is an accomplished practitioner of the Japanese tea ceremony and an internationally certified kimono dresser.
