Originally from Arlington, Virginia, Emily “Emie” George moved to Los Angeles to study Sociology and Urban & Environmental Policy at Occidental College. Her academic focus of urban sociology, social change theory, and environmental justice inspires her work as the YOLA at HOLA Coordinator. She came to HOLA in November 2014 from the Los Angeles Neighborhood Land Trust, where she conducted community research in South Los Angeles and the Rampart area to determine community needs with regards to green space, recreational opportunities, and environmental safety. Having studied cello and choral music since the age of 6, Emie joined our Music Department team with an excitement to continue working in the neighborhood and use music as a vehicle for social change.

As YOLA at HOLA Coordinator, Emie manages the day-to-day logistical and operational needs of the program and oversees student enrollment. She also acts as a parent liaison for all YOLA at HOLA families, creating communications materials and eliciting her Spanish fluency to ensure an open dialogue between parents and teaching artists. She’s also been known to sit in on orchestra rehearsals, playing with the students in the cello section to dust off her own skills!
