Bard College

In 2013, HOLA welcomed the Bard Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program to our campus. Bard MAT students spend one year in classes and residency earning a master’s degree and California credential. Students can focus on History, Literature, Mathematics or Biology. Bard has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education with a Teacher Quality Partnership grant that offers up to $30,000 in stipends to individuals who make a three year commitment to teaching in high-needs public schools.

Through this partnership, HOLA provides a base for internships and coursework that encourages wide-ranging and creative thinking about the problems of poverty and education. The MAT candidates work alongside HOLA staff to develop programming and tutoring opportunities that continually highlight the importance of building relationships with students. For the past several decades Bard has developed a respected reputation working collaboratively with organizations that share its belief that serious study in the Liberal Arts and Humanities, including the imaginative exploration of math and science, should be available for anyone. We are thrilled to partner with Bard college in their efforts to train the next generation of educators. For upcoming deadlines and enrollment information for the Bard College at HOLA MAT Program, please click here.

Annie Berman AmeriCorps VISTA Member, Communications

Annie is thrilled to be joining HOLA for the next year as our new AmeriCorps Communications VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America). She grew up in Guilford, CT and attended Smith College in Massachusetts where she studied journalism, creative writing, and American history with a focus on gender and immigration. Although she loves the east coast, she has always wanted to explore California while doing meaningful and creative work. Annie is excited to build upon the work done by previous VISTAs, in the greater effort of strengthening HOLA’s communications. During her time at HOLA, she hopes to promote writing opportunities for HOLA students. In her free time, she can be found exploring her new city, hiking, writing stories, sampling food trucks, and snuggling with puppies.

After two years of volunteering as a tutor, mentor and teaching artist assistant, the perfect position opened up for Lilian. She now helps manage the 30+ weekly art classes, runs homework help, assists with art department projects and events, among other duties.

Rebecca Clark Administrative Director Heart of Los AngelesExecutive Staff
Work Phone: (213) 389-1148 x224

Rebecca’s commitment to community service dates back to the civil rights movement; at the age of ten, she met and marched with the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.  She went on to serve as a volunteer for Cesar Chavez and his Farm Workers’ movement in Delano during the summer of 1968.  Throughout the years, she has worked on the campaigns of local and national Democratic candidates, and has been an active volunteer in various human and animal rights organizations. Rebecca has served as Youth Commissioner for the Tenth Council District (2004-2005) and as Vice President for the Neighborhood Council of Pico Park (2004-2006).

Last year, she received her certification in Human Resources from LMU. Rebecca’s entrepreneurial background includes ten years as a managing partner of Trumps Restaurant, co-founder of the gourmet restaurant service Why Cook, and launching a boutique, Rebecca Clark, in 1999. Most recently, Rebecca and her husband recently open Rascal, a local restaurant located in the Wilshire Corridor. Rascal now employs an HOLA alumnus, who dreams of one day opening his own restaurant.

Rebecca’s commitment to HOLA’s youth has remained steadfast during her nine years at HOLA. She is awed on a daily basis by her colleagues’ passion and dedication to the education and well being of our students and the community.

Nancy Dodge LCSW Counselor and Licensed Clinical Social Worker Heart of Los AngelesServices
Work Phone: (213) 389-1148

Nancy received her undergraduate degree at Georgetown University.   After working in mental health in Boston, Nancy obtained her Master’s degree at Smith College.  Having discovered her love of working with children, adolescents and their families, Nancy continued post-graduate training at the Graduate Center for Child Development and Psychotherapy in Los Angeles.

Nancy has been working with children and adolescents since the 1980s, when she began working at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. She has an ongoing private practice in psychotherapy since that time.  She has also supervised several Master’s-level social work students.

In July 2009, Nancy began to volunteer at HOLA to provide counseling services to students at HOLA.  During that year, HOLA forged a relationship with Cal State Los Angeles Master’s in Social Work program, and Nancy supervised two students for their academic year. During that year, the counseling department worked with over 110 students and 26 families.  Nancy is now on the staff at HOLA, and is hoping to develop and expand the counseling program with the assistance of graduate students in the field.

Nancy is married and the mother of two teenagers, one of whom has volunteered at HOLA.  When she is not working, Nancy hikes in the canyons of Los Angeles, practices yoga, and sings with the Metropolitan Master Chorale.

Ben Ede YOLA at HOLA Teaching Artist

Ben has been working to give kids a chance since 2008, when he became a founding teacher and program coordinator for Kid City South Park, a program in downtown LA that reaches disadvantaged youth with positive after-school activities. At Kid CIty, Ben tutored students in academic subjects, created a rock band, jazz band and all-girl pop group and organized activities to encourage youth to be involved with bettering the community. As the fourth/fifth grade academic tutor with YOLA at HOLA, Ben is especially passionate about integrating arts with academics in order to engage students in learning and connect their music education with academic success. Ben is dedicated to providing his students with tools that will allow them to effectively communicate their ideas and explore their passions.
