Maria was born in Morelos, México and was raised in Los Angeles. After attending HOLA as a student since 1999, in 2008 she had her first exhibit at the Rebecca Ibel Gallery in Ohio. She has been in many group shows, including a show at the Stanford University Faculty Club and she assisted well-known artist Peter Alexander in a print project he did at HOLA. She assisted artist Dan McCleary on a federal mural commission in New Mexico. She also assisted her husband, Javier Carrillo, in his commission for a tapestry for the University of Southern California. While working at HOLA, Maria started a Taller de Madres workshop.  Mothers of HOLA students come in once a week and participate in art classes taught by Maria, while their kids attend HOLA art classes. Maria attended Penland School of Arts and Craft in the summer of 2010. In addition to her duties at HOLA, Maria is currently attending Pasadena City College and is the Assistant Director at Art Division, a nonprofit organization.
