Lakers Basketball Clinics and Leagues
Heart of Los Angeles, with the incredible support of the Los Angeles Lakers Youth Foundation, offers free youth basketball clinics (Ages 7-17) on the first Saturday of every month, usually from 1pm -3pm. In the summer, the times vary, with some clinics being held in the evenings. Participants receive basketball instruction along with information on living and eating healthy. The Lakers Youth Foundation also supports HOLA’s Junior Jump Shot Basketball League for elementary and middle school aged boys and girls. The leagues are held in the spring and fall of each year and serve over 350 youth annually.
Central City Athletic Association
HOLA is also the co-founder of the Central City Athletic Association (CCAA), which provides basketball leagues for girls and boys located throughout Los Angeles. The Central City Basketball Association hosts leagues for high school boys each winter, serving approximately 150 young men. In the spring, the Central City Girls’ Basketball Association provides approximately 150 high school girls with the opportunity to play in competitive leagues.
More than 35 Heart of LA youth recently had the opportunity to learn basketball skills from some of the best. Los Angeles Sparks players Alana Beard and Candice Wiggins spent a saturday morning at the LaFayette Park Recreation Center, running dribbling and shooting drills with the young athletes. Every afternoon hundreds of kids, ages 6-19, are participating in over 75 academic and enrichment classes on HOLA’s campus. In addition to daily academic support from staff, tutors and volunteers, every afternoon HOLA students have the chance to explore opportunities they can’t get anywhere else, inside or outside of school. As fall turned into winter, HOLA’s basketball and soccer leagues held their playoffs and crowned their champions. In partnership with LA City Department of Recreation and Parks, HOLA is able to offer Junior Jumpshot basketball leagues from Pee Wee through Middle School, with weekly practices and games for 185 young athletes. Kids and adults alike had a blast at HOLA’s 6th annual HOLA BowLA. The afternoon was filled with lots of strikes and spares, with special prizes going to the bowlers with the highest scores. It’s fall and yes, that means that over 500 elementary, middle and high school youth are participating in HOLA’s soccer and basketball leagues. This fall’s soccer league is serving over 350 elementary, middle and high school youth and more than 150 elementary and middle school girls and boys are participating in HOLA’s basketball leagues. HOLA and Department of Rec & Parks Host Launch of Initiative Between Laureus USA and Mercedes-Benz USA
On the first day of summer programming, HOLA and the Los Angeles City Department of Recreation and Parks hosted the launch of a collaborative initiative between the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA (Laureus USA) and Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA). The initiative will place and train 40 Coach Across America (CAA) coaches in 10 projects at after-school sports programs in LA, benefiting 5,000 underserved youth in 15 communities.
