YOLA at HOLA Musicians Perform with Big Sean
Last week, 25 YOLA at HOLA strings musicians were honored with an invitation to perform at WE Day, accompanying Big Sean’s finale performance of “One Man Can Change the World” at The Forum.
WE Day is “a powerful series of educational events that combines the energy of a live concert with the inspiration of extraordinary stories of leadership and change.” The event brought together 16,000 students and educators in an inspirational setting, celebrating the commitment they have made to take action on local and global causes they care about.
“I hope you learn how to make it on your own,” Big Sean and an 100 youth piece choir sang while our youth strings musicians accompanied them. “And if you love yourself, just know you’ll never be alone.”
This was wonderful opportunity for our students. The music they performed challenged them in a way that was both exciting and attainable. “These students need this type of challenge, and they were ready for it,” said Monique Van Willingh, YOLA at HOLA & Music Director, who shared how proud she was of her students. She also noted that the mission of WE day aligns with HOLA’s; it is focused on doing good acts for transformational change locally and globally.
Students spent the day listening to celebrity speakers including Zooey Deschanel, Nikki Reed, Demi Lovato and Jordan Smith speak about youth’s power to change the world.
“You are powerful!” They reiterated.
It was an inspiring and thrilling event for our students to be invited to participate in, and we’re so glad for the honor and opportunity.
