Celebrating 50 years and $5 billion in grants, the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has named their 2016 list of recipients, including Heart of Los Angeles. HOLA is honored to be among the list of esteemed establishments for the 4th year in a row. The $50,000 Art Works grant works directly to support the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) at HOLA.

Executive Director, Tony Brown comments, “Funding our YOLA at HOLA Orchestra program has helped to ensure that hundreds of students, who are growing up amidst great challenges and obstacles, are now able to excel both inside and outside of school through music. On behalf of the kids who have grown alongside our program through 4 years of NEA funding, thank you for giving them a chance to see that they have great potential and the ability to reach that potential.”

This 6-year old partnership program with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, was inspired by Music Director Gustavo Dudamel’s formative experience with El Sistema, Venezuela’s youth orchestra movement. YOLA at HOLA proudly serves nearly 250 local youth ages 6-17, who come from over 90 feeder schools. Most students spend over 15 hours each week in rehearsals and classes, absorbing musicianship, music theory, composition, improvisation and music history. The other students are new to program and introduced with choir and musicianship classes before moving on to the full orchestra.
