HOLA Welcomes 10 Summer Associates
This summer, HOLA is thrilled to welcomes 10 AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associates. Six of the 10 VISTAs are HOLA alumni themselves, returning to give back to their community. The VISTAs will be supporting HOLA’s academic programs, working with students in the SmartStart, Bridges, PAT and Scientific Arts Programs. The VISTAs will focus on reducing summer learning loss and assist with academic remediation, working individually and in small groups with the highest need students. Research shows that without continued academic support underserved youth will lose critical skills they have developed during the school year. When these kids return to school in the fall, they will struggle to catch up and too many will be left behind. HOLA’s summer programs provide that much needed support and with the addition of the Summer Associates, this summer we will be able to help even more kids stay on track and ready to head back to school.
The VISTAs will also be helping program staff with student supervision and lead classroom activities. The extra support will significantly decrease the staff to student ratio and with the VISTAs serving during the months of June and July, HOLA will also be able to offer robust academic support throughout the summer.
The VISTA program (Volunteers In Service To America) was established in 1964 as the domestic equivalent to the Peace Corps after the Peace Corps’ overwhelming success abroad. It is a federally funded national service program designed specifically to fight poverty by working with established non-profits to help the more than 46 million Americans living in poverty. In addition to the Summer Associates, HOLA also has three full-time AmeriCorps VISTAs on staff, providing critical capacity building support.
