HOLA on YouTube

BobBob Mintzer, legendary jazz musician, stopped by the HOLA Music Studios to lead a Master Class with HOLA’s Jazz Band. Bob began the class by asking the students to play a piece for him. Under the direction of HOLA Jazz Band Director Jon Armstrong, the students played their take of the classic “Caravan.” Bob was very impressed with the performance and made a number of great suggestions that the students will use in their studies for years to come. He explained, through words and music, the importance of putting some of your own personality into the piece you are playing. The kids were wowed by his talent and soaked in all of the advice that was offered. After the class, Bob took questions and then shared a pot luck dinner with the young musicians and their families. Thank you to our friends at Eastman Music Company for arranging the visit.

Bob is a jazz saxophonist, composer, arranger, big band leader and member of the Yellowjackets. He is equally active in the areas of performance, composing/arranging, and music education. Bob is on the faculty of the University of Southern California, teaching jazz composition and saxophone. He also directs the Thornton Jazz Orchestra and conducts a jazz workshop class for incoming freshmen and sophomore jazz students. Bob does workshops all over the globe, writes books on a variety of musical subjects, plays on countless recordings every year and is often invited to be guest conductor and soloist with large and small bands all over the world.
