Winter Session STEAMs Ahead
Along with old favorites like Healthy Cooking and Girls on the Run, this winter there are many exciting, new STEAM-focused offerings. The PAT program is offering a Youth Media class, teaching students how to document their personal stories, focusing on voice and action. The Visual Arts Department is teaming up with the National Park Service in a class called Infinite Patterns. High school students will take field trips to beautiful places around town, including the Santa Monica Mountains and Eaton Canyon, creating artwork inspired by the textures, sounds and landscapes they experience. By the end of the three month project, the students will create an ‘animated’ video with a soundtrack using field recordings from outdoor excursions.
The Athletics Department is also introducing a new program for a select number of SmartStart elementary students. The students will engage in guided activities aimed at helping them to burn off excess energy before heading into their regular afternoon activities. This pilot program comes out of recent studies that have shown the positive effects physical activity has on both learning and behavior in the classroom.
