Bard College’s Masters of Arts in Teaching Program (MAT). As an MAT mentor, Yusuf is paired with three students from the PAT High School Program and not only helps them with academics, but also mentors them and helps them with goal setting. Yusuf thinks it’s very important to connect with students on a personal level about shared interests in order to build a trusting relationship. He loves talking to students about music, one of the biggest subjects they have in common.
HOLA serves as the practicum site for Bard’s MAT program. After working with HOLA students for the first half of the graduate program, MAT students go on to student teach at local schools. Yusuf is excited to get back into the classroom. Before being accepted into Bard’s MAT program, Yusuf served as an Americorps member through City Year for two years, mentoring and tutoring youth at a middle school in Watts. While there, he was able to observe many different teaching styles and he really enjoys working with students and kindling their interest in learning.
After graduating from the MAT program, Yusuf will remain in Los Angeles, teaching for three years. While he hopes to be teaching world history or even government, he says he will be happy with any opportunity that comes his way.
