HOLA on YouTube

Heart of Los Angeles is now in the third year of a thriving partnership with LifeSail, Inc, a non-profit that promotes character-building through sailing and seamanship. Students in the LifeSail leadership class built the Bella Opti from scratch under the guidance of LifeSail founder Matt Schultz, increasing the size of the fleet of HOLA sailboats to three! The goal of the LifeSail leadership class is to help the students develop motivation, teamwork and leadership skills through the building of the boat. The proud students launched the new boat, as well as many others from the LifeSail fleet, on the lake in MacArthur Park during their spring break. The older students in the class taught the newer students the basics and took other students and staff out for rides on the normally vacant lake. “The boat launch has become a wonderful annual community event. Watching the kids as they experience the beauty and wonder of small boat sailing in our own back yard is truly inspirational. This class brings the older, more experienced students together with the younger ones to learn from each other. In addition to learning leadership skills, during the course of the class, the kids are learning about a number of STEM related subjects, including physics, engineering and marine geology,” said Loren Rubin, HOLA’s Director of Leadership and Summer Programs. The students will spend the spring session learning how to swim and they will travel to Marina del Rey twice a week during the summer for sailing lessons.

Thank you to the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Councilmember Gilbert Cedillo, and Levitt Pavilion MacArthur Park (Levitt LA) for their continued support of HOLA and the community.
