HOLA on YouTube

Not only is Lucia Beltran graduating from Franklin & Marshall College this May, but upon graduation she will be joining Teach for America! Lucia recently took time out of her incredibly busy schedule to share a little bit about what she’s been up to and how Heart of Los Angeles helped her get there. She started coming to HOLA the summer before her senior year, looking for support as she began to think about applying to college. She was attending a pilot school and there wasn’t a college counselor on campus. She was thrilled to find a program in the neighborhood that could provide her with essential resources that her school could not. She was paired up with a mentor, Barbara Suzaki, who worked tirelessly with Lucia throughout the application process to help her find the perfect match. Barbara and Lucia still speak often and Barbara will be attending Lucia’s graduation in May.

While at Franklin & Marshall, Lucia took full advantage of the liberal arts curriculum and she will graduate with a double major in American Studies and Studio Art. She has spent a lot of time this year thinking about life after college and before applying to Teach For America, she did her research. She contacted a Teach For America staff member and they spoke at length about the program. After that call, she knew that’s what she wanted to do. After graduation, Lucia will be heading to Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas to teach in an elementary school. She plans to work towards her Masters Degree in Education while she is fulfilling her two-year commitment to Teach For America and she hopes to one day help students like herself who come from the inner-city. As a teacher, she plans to encourage her students to pursue higher education and to make lasting change in underserved communities.

Congratulations and best of luck to you Lucia!
