HOLA on YouTube

Recently, an extraordinary event happened at Heart of Los Angeles. A panel of parents of HOLA alumni assembled at HOLA to speak with the current class of high school seniors and their parents. For anyone who has gone to college or sent a child to college, you know all too well that this is an extremely tumultuous time for the seniors and their parents. For many of these families, this is the first time they are dealing with the idea of college. They have questions, concerns, fears and a mix of other emotions. For the parents on the panel, many of them were in those same shoes a short time ago. What ensued on a Thursday evening was an honest and open conversation about children, college and a lot in between.

Wondering whether or not it had an impact? The next day, one student shared:

“It was very helpful! I’m really glad my mom was able to go. Once we were going home, she actually asked me what colleges I’m considering. I think next year’s meeting should be mandatory. Not only do parents get a lot from it, but the students do too.”

A huge thank you to High School Coordinator Sonia Soriano and Parent and Community Resource Director Vero Matos for orchestrating the night.
