Kevin has been coming to HOLA for as long as he can remember. In his early years his focus was on soccer (still his favorite sport), but when he reached high school, HOLA staff encouraged him to participate in the high school program and to start thinking about college. Up until then, college wasn’t even on Kevin’s radar. Kevin soon became very involved in HOLA’s high school program and in his senior year, he applied for a Posse Foundation Scholarship. He made it to the final round, but unfortunately did not receive the scholarship. But thanks to a program officer at the Foundation and Kevin’s AP English teacher, the University of Wisconsin – Madison became his first choice. Wisconsin you ask? According to Kevin, in high school his teachers would talk about the colleges they attended, but without much enthusiasm. But his AP English teacher carried his Badger pride wherever he went and that resonated with Kevin. The Posse Foundation program officer stayed in touch with Kevin and connected him to key people at the University. There’s been no looking back and today, as Kevin begins his senior year, he is still in touch with that program officer and he wears his Badger red proudly.
Kevin has had a transformative experience at Wisconsin. He spent last semester in Peru, where he made friendships that he know will last a life time. He is double majoring in Sociology and Social Welfare and hopes to one day work at a place like HOLA. He has been very involved with HOLA’s Alumni Association and feels strongly about the importance of staying connected to his HOLA classmates – “we are each other’s resources.” Kevin lives with his Mom and little brother, who he hopes will attend Wisconsin in the Fall.
