Bruce Hooks, HOLA’s Athletics Director, has been honored by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN) with a 2012 PCFSN Community Leadership Award. The award is given annually to individuals who improve the lives of others within their community by providing or enhancing opportunities to engage in sports, physical activities, fitness or nutrition-related programs.

“It is our pleasure to present this award to Bruce Hooks,” said Shellie Pfohl, Executive Director of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. “Individuals like Bruce are working tirelessly to encourage physical activity and proper nutrition to positively impact the health of their communities. Together we are all working to make our nation a healthier one.”

Since joining HOLA’s staff in 2008, Bruce has helped foster vibrant athletic programs that provide at-risk youth with unprecedented opportunities to play sports completely free of charge.  Bruce has served as the administrator for the Mayor’s acclaimed Summer Night Lights Program in Lafayette Park, providing late-night sports leagues to hundreds of gang and community members, helping them to reconnect to their community without violence. Through Bruce’s leadership, more than 1,400 at-risk youth and their families now have healthy alternatives to gang involvement and destructive behaviors and the opportunity to change their life trajectory.
